Balidhan

Balidhan is a historic tragic story. Maharana Rajasimha, the King of Udaipur, was a brave King. Chudavath was his commander in chief. Chudavath had married the priness of Hadavamsha just four days back. The story brings out, on the one hand, the bravery of chudavath and, on the other, the sacrifice of Hadirani.

This story took place during the rule of Auranhzeb, the Mughal ruler. Auranhgzeb wanted to marry the priness of Roopnagar. But the priness wanted to marry the prince of Udaipur. She sent a letter to the prince explaining the situation. Rajasimha, the prince's father, called a meeting of his court to discuss the matter. But no courtier came forward with anysuggestion. Finally, Chudavath suggested that half the army could go with the king to Roopnagar and after the marriage of the prince come back to M ewar, while the other half could go and stop Aurangzeb. All the courties accepted this suggestion. After the court was dismissed. Chudavath went towards his house. He was prepared to die for his country but was worried about his wife.

Hadirani, Chudavath's wife, was a Kshatriya. She knew her duty. She wanted to save the prinecess of Roopnagar from the Mughal ruler. After Chudavath left with the army to fight Aurangzeb, she began to think about her husband.  Her husband was hesitant to go to the battlefield leaving her. Hadirani did not like this attitude of her husband. As she was immersed in these thoughts, a messenger came from Chudavath. He said that his master was restless. He wanted her to give somthing as a token so that he could fight with a firm mind. Hadirani realized that as long as she was there, Chudavath would not be able to discharge his duty. She thought for a moment and took a sword and severed her head. Seeing this extraordinary sacrifice the messenger was filled with fervour. He took her head and came running towards Chudavath.

As soon as Chudavath saw the head he was filled with pride and veneration for his wife. He hung her sacred head round his neck began to fight. This sacrifice of Hadirani is worth writing in golden letters. Even the flames of Jouhar will extinguish before this sacrifice of Hadirani.
